WhollyFare® · The Engine · Live · Charlottesville, VA
Prices aren't coming down. Your grocery bill can. WhollyFare® is the proof — live, in the real world, with real families, at real stores. It had to be built first. It had to work first. It does. Everything else follows from this.
The Workflow
Every Wednesday, Tim pulls sale data from ~10 grocery chains across the Charlottesville region — Kroger via live API (239+ items), and Food Lion, Aldi, Harris Teeter, Giant, Lidl, Walmart, Whole Foods, and Wegmans via Claude Vision PDF extraction. What's on sale this week at your actual stores — not national averages, not estimates.
Before a single item reaches the optimizer, the constraint engine filters the full inventory against the household's dietary profile — allergens, diagnoses, and dietary identity (vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, halal, kosher, keto, and more). Hard exclusions. No exceptions. Every rejection is logged.
Five dinners, assembled from what passes constraints and is actually on sale this week. Recipes are drawn from a 183-recipe library across 5 cuisines and 3 dietary identity collections — ranked by how many of their ingredients are on sale this week. Protein variety enforced. Meal rationale shown. The Sunday Buy-Off lets households approve, swap, or skip each meal before anything gets locked.
The shopping list breaks down by store. The Found Money Ledger shows gross savings, trip costs (at $0.22/mile), and net savings. If a store's savings don't cover the drive, we flag it and suggest skipping. Gross numbers are never the headline.
The Core
The constraint engine is not a filter. It is a precondition. Before the meal planner sees a single sale item, every item in the week's circular has already passed through the household's dietary profile — allergens, health conditions, lifestyle exclusions, member-specific rules.
This is not a toggle the user can switch off to see better deals. It is not a preference. It is a hard wall that runs every time, on every item, before any optimization happens. A family member's tree nut allergy is not traded for a cheaper dinner. A CKD patient's potassium restrictions are not relaxed to hit a savings target.
Every rejection is logged and shown. If chicken breast was excluded because one member has a poultry sensitivity, that is surfaced. If a particular brand was rejected because it contains a listed allergen, the household sees it. Radical transparency is a founding commitment — there are no black boxes in how plans are built.
This is also the architectural decision that makes the next three Wholly brands straightforward to build. The same constraint engine that handles dietary profiles handles ingredient exclusions in WhollyBare, vet diet restrictions in WhollyPaws, and any filter a household can define. The engine is the platform. WhollyFare is its first application.
The Data
WhollyFare was not launched with projections. It was launched with a pilot — one household, ~10 major grocery chains, Charlottesville, Virginia. The goal was simple: generate undeniable Found Money data before building anything else. Here is what that looks like.
Tim Hislop, Abby, and Chas — three members, ~10 grocery chains, two dietary profiles in the constraint engine. Running since Phase 1 launch, tracked weekly. Real circulars, real receipts, real numbers.
~10 chains Kroger · Food Lion · Aldi · Harris Teeter · Giant · Lidl · Walmart · Whole Foods · Wegmans +The savings argument is simple: a meal plan built from ~10 stores' sale circulars, filtered for your household, finds deals no single-store shop can match. The cross-grocer optimizer finds the lowest available price for each ingredient across all participating stores — net of the trip cost to get there.
$0 Revenue from placements, affiliates, or dataHelloFresh charges approximately $142 for five dinners for a family of three. WhollyFare's plan for the same week costs roughly $64 in groceries — using the same stores you already shop, with your own ingredients, from what's actually on sale. The ledger shows the gap, every week.
~$78 Typical weekly delta vs. HelloFresh (net)Investors in consumer platforms ask one question before any other: does this work in the real world, or only in a deck? Phase 1 exists to answer that question with receipts. Eight weeks of actual data from an actual household. That data is the argument that unlocks Phase 2, Phase 3, and the investment that scales the platform nationally.
239+ Items pulled via Kroger API in week oneThe Platform Thesis
WhollyFare's architecture was designed from the start to be a platform, not a product. The constraint engine, the circular ingestion pipeline, the trip cost math, the Found Money ledger — none of these are food-specific. They are infrastructure. Here is what that infrastructure unlocks.
Paper goods, laundry, cleaning supplies — the same circular ingestion, the same unit price comparison, the same trip cost math. Constraint filtering applied to ingredient exclusions and brand ethics instead of dietary rules. Phase 2.
Multi-pet profiles, vet diet support, ingredient-safe filtering. The constraint engine handles pet dietary restrictions the same way it handles household member allergens — as hard rules that never bend for savings. Phase 2.
Ingredient avoidance, ethical commitments, skin and sensitivity rules — the constraint engine knows your profile. It filters every product at every store against your rules before the savings engine runs. Phase 2.
The manual + PDF extraction workflow is a POC scaffold. Phase 3 replaces it with automated circular parsing, direct retail data feeds, and a React + FastAPI backend that scales to 15+ chains and 50,000+ households.
Receipt auto-capture, preference learning, delivery hub integration (Instacart, Shipt), community sharing. $2M+ ARR milestone. The platform thesis proven at scale — not just one household in Charlottesville.
Bulk-unit math, membership economics, hybrid trip planning. The Sincere Strategy applied to wholesale — the category where price opacity is highest and household savings are largest. The horizon play.
The Commitment
No food brand pays to appear in a WhollyFare plan. No grocer pays to be recommended. If an item appears in your meal plan, it earned its place on price, availability, and suitability — nothing else.
Dietary restrictions, allergen profiles, and health conditions are preconditions, not preferences. The constraint engine runs before optimization. A $0.50 saving never overrides a household rule.
If an item was excluded from your plan, you see exactly why. The rejection log is part of the product, not a hidden internal record. Radical transparency is a founding commitment, not a feature.
The Found Money Ledger shows gross savings minus trip costs at $0.22/mile. We flag stores where the drive costs more than the savings. We say so. Even when it makes the headline number smaller.
